ELE 2018 – Reflections & Presentations

by Sabrina Meli

As our trip is coming to an end, today was a day of reflection for the “Permaculture Kids.” We arrived in Michigan a short two weeks ago not knowing what to expect, but we will leave with memories and experiences that will last us a lifetime. I am so thankful to have been able to be a part of this trip and opportunity to learn more about how we can make more sustainable choices for ourselves and our campus.

Today we had one last meditation session with Sister Carol, who gifted each of us with a signed copy of her book, Permaculture: Finding Our Own Vines and Fig Trees.

Afterwards, Elaine led a reflection and evaluation activity. As everyone reflected back on the past two weeks, a common theme emerged: Most of us had little or no connection with one another before we arrived. By the end of the two weeks, we became friends, worked together as a team, and grew hopes of bringing what we learned in Michigan back to campus.

After our final lunch in Madden, it was time to share our experiences with the Sisters, who were very curious to know what we had been up to.

We talked about all we had accomplished throughout our trip, including the hugel mounds, edible forest gardens, worm bin, rain garden, and everything in between.

Not only did we form bonds with each other, but with several of the Sisters as well. We will surely miss everyone as we journey back home!

While we are unsure of what initiatives we will be able to implement at Barry, we are sure to accomplish great things thanks to what we have learned on this trip. We have already started brainstorming and planning. Like an acorn we must start small, see if we can take root, and grow from there.
